Wymondham 8 (81) v Thorpe Marriott "A" 0 (29)
Wymondham completed there final division 1 game of the season with a comfortable 8-0 win against five man Thorpe Marriott "A". With the away side only fielding five players this straight away made life difficult with T. Redwood and W. Hoggan paired up against B. Saunders, P. King and C. Mann for the first session. The home side had a standard start and only led 6-0 after five ends, but a maximum on end eight and a number of two's saw the match end 23-3. S. Archer, S. Phillips and D. Phillips beat S. Redwood, S. Turner and T. Turner. The away side made a good start and only found themseleves 6-5 down after eight ends, but then a collapse saw them concede two fours on succesive ends for a 14-5 lead for Wymondham. Thorpe Marriott won four of the last five ends, but the home side edged out 15-11 winners. Second session saw S. Foster replace S. Phillips with S. Archer and D. Phillips beat T. Redwood and W. Hoggan. The away side started off with a two on end one and a couple on singles on ends four and five which saw them 5-4 down, but then the home side stepped up a gear which saw them pick up four fours and three to see them finish the match 25-6 up. Second match saw P. Saunders replace B. Saunders with P. King andf C. Mann who beat S. Redwood, T. Turner and S. Turner. At the end of the first match the away side swapped with Sylvia skipping and Tony playing second. They continued the same method for there second match but soon had to change back to Tony skipping as Wymondham racked up an 11-3 lead after eight ends and the slump continued for the away side as they went down 18-9. This now leaves Thorpe Marriott still needing just one more win to secure them of division 1 bowling next season but this won't be easy as there final match is at Kirby Bedon "A" on friday. Wymondham now have the summer cup final to look forward too on tuesday with a decent third place in the league this season.
Wymondham 4 (54) v Hevingham 4 (45)
This was another dissapointing home result, which saw there third draw at home. The first session on mat 1 saw P. King, S. Phillips and C. Mann beat I. McLean, A. Bunn and V. Woods 14-10. Although the home side only scored on six ends, like there match at Marriott, it was enough as a five on end six and a four on end thirteen saw them over the line as the away side could only muster a series of 1's. Mat 2 saw a very topsy turby game where S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips lost to P. Bunn, M. Hall and D. Sharpe 14-15. After five ends the score was tied at 3-3 but a couple of fours for the away side pushed the score to 8-13 after ten ends. A four on end thirteen for Wymondham was not enough as a single on the last end for Hevingham was enough to seal the game.
Second session saw P. Saunders and B. Saunders with C. Mann beat P. Bunn, M. Hall and D. Sharpe. The home side took a comanding lead of 9-2 after seven ends. A two on end ten was as good as it got for the away side as the Wymondham triple quickly got into a rhythem with a combfortable 15-7 win. Mat 2 saw S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips lose to I. McLean, A. Bunn and V. Woods 11-13. Like in the first match the Hevingham block won more ends and flew into a 10-1 lead after seven ends. But then a maximum on end eleven saw the away side pegged back to just two shots with the score at 9-11 after eleven ends. But the Hevingham triple with Vic "the quiet man" Woods saw the game safe with the last four ends shared with both sides picking up singles. Wymondham now have Thorpe Marriott "A" at home next sunday and then the crucial summer cup final a week tuesday at Marriott.
Thorpe Marriott "A" 4 (52) v Wymondham 4 (57) - 11-08-09
This result at Marriott was a well deserved draw for Wymondham but this was all in vain as on the same night found out that Bob Carter had beaten Hevingham 8-0 which secured them second place in the league. However the performances from all the games were pleasing in places! Especially from S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips who on there first game shot into a 6-1 lead against S. Redwood, S. Turner and T. Turner. But a collapse in the mid part of the match was there undoing where they dropped 12 shots in five ends for the game to finish 11-18 down. The other mat saw P. Saunders, P. King and C. Mann narrowly beaten by L. Murphy, K. Frost and W. Hoggan. A five on end three for the away side and two 2's and a single made the score 10-3 after seven ends. But again a collapse in this match where lead and second where slack put pressure on skip Mann who in turn could not produce the goods and were left all square at 10-10 after eleven ends. A one and two left the away side 13-10 up but a "blip" of a wood by Mann gave away three shots on end fourteen where the scores were tied going into the last end where a measure was won by the homeside to end 13-14. Second session saw two very different games where the unchanged triple of S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips swept away T. Frost, K. Frost and W. Hoggan. As they started off the in the first match this time the Wymondham triple made no mistakes and gelled well together to produce a well deserved 19-8 win. This was a great win and all will now be pleased that summer cup final will be played at Marriott with a result like that. On the other mat Mann was now teamed up with B. Saunders and S. Phillips and this match was going much the same as the previous one with no real quality as T. Redwood, S. Turner and T. Turner were playing much the better bowls especially from skip Tony Turner. As the away side only scored on six of the fifteen ends, it was a shocking surprise to find out they actually WON the match. Being 6-12 down with just three ends remaining the Wymondham triple played there best end of the match and put home skip Turner under emense pressure as they conceded a maximum six on end fourteen to turn the match on it's head. Now 13-12 up going into the last end Wymondham grabbed a single to clinch it 14-12, a result that stunned the Marriott triple and had them argueing after the match. But this sort of freakish thing does happen now and again and not even the Wymondham triple knew how to react, but they know they did not play well enough to win the match over the course of the game. But Mann will feel he had his just desserts after losing his first game. All Wymondham can hope for now is a top three finish.
Wymondham 7 (74) v Sprowston SSC 1 (33) - 09-08-09
This was a great and pleasing result for Wymondham as they try to seize second place in the league. The first session was a pretty comfortable one as B. Saunders, S. Phillips and C. Mann breezed past L. Chadwick, L. Chadwick and D. Dewing 23-2. Although unlucky on some ends the homeside had too many strong heads and Daivid at skip although did well to cut shots down never managed to get a stronghold on the game as the home side went 10-0 up after eight ends. Half way through the game David swapped with Les at skip but this made little effect as a five on end nine put the game to bed. S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips also had a very strong game as they beat C. Thornton, J. Poynter and P. Smart 16-6. The home side leaped into a 9-1 lead after six ends and kept the preasure on as John then swapped with Peter but this like the other match made no difference as they went onto a comfortable win.
Second session saw P. Saunders and P. King in for B. Saunders and S. Phillips with C. Mann against D. Fuller who replaced C. Thornton with P. Smart at second and J. Poynter at skip. Keeping the same set-up at the end of the first game Sprowton found themselves 9-0 down after four ends and never recovered as they were beaten 19-9 with Pat, Peter and Chris all having a good match like on thursday night. The other match saw both blocks unchanged as S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips drew against L. Chadwick, L. Chadwick and D. Dewing 16-16. The away side got to grips with the mat and managed to pick a couple of three's and a four to see them with a 12-14 lead after twelve ends. A three on the next end for Wymondham and a two for Sprowston on the fourteenth made for an interesting penultimate end. Deb at skip with her last wood managed a terrific and deserved draw as the homeside picked up one . A good all round performance from Wymondham who are now all set for an important trip to Thorpe Marriott on tuesday.
Wymondham 4 (61) v First Bus 4 (53) - 26-07-09
First Bus' first trip to Wymondham proved to be a pleasing one for captain Bob Oatway as he not only had the shortest trip compared to the rest of his team, as he lives in Wymondham, but at times played like the home side as he skipped both his blocks to wins. C. Coman, T. Gray and B. Oatway who played superbly all afternoon, won there games16-11 against B. Saunders, S. Phillips and C. Mann and 18-9 against P. Saunders, S. Foster and D. Phillips. Mid way through the first game it was found that mat 2 was incorrectly posisitioned and this proved to be a costly mistake. Both wins for the home side came on mat 1 as P. Saunders, S. Foster and D. Phillips beat G. Crowe, L. Crowe and M. Kemp 21-11. Elaine Oatway came in to replace Gordon for the second game and Peter King replaced Brian Saunders but this did not change the result as the home side won 20-8. This is a set back for Wymondham but they still have a chance of finishing second as long as they win there three remaining home games and also have a chance of getting to the semi's of the cup tomorrow night at home to Thorpe Marriott "A".
Kirby Bedon "A" 8 (70) v Wymondham 0 (37) - 20-07-09
Wymondham travelled to an inform Kirby side who had there sights firmly set on there tenth league victory out of eleven. There grit and determination saw them pick up all eight points, as both first session matches saw the home side win by margins of ten on both games as S. Foster, D. Phillips and C. Mann lost to L. Chilman, J. Aggas and P. Watson 10-20, while P. King, B. Saunders and S. Phillips lost to C. Aggas, T. Goldsmith and S. Goldsmith also 10-20.
Second session saw a bit more resistance from the away side but just couldn't match the strength of skips Selwyn and Phil who were on top form again. Shirley, Deb and Chris all had a reasonable match on the "tricky" mat but from ends 5 to 10 where there downfall as they failed to register a single shot and found themselves 9-5 down, a four on end 11 soon made the score level but from there after did not score another point as they went dwon 9-18. The other mat saw another close match but again Peter, Brian and Steve failed to win enough ends as they also went down 8-12. Kirby after this result are well on there way to there tenth title and Wymondham will now have to rely on there four remaining home games to secure a runners up spot.
Wymondham 6 (75) v Bob Carter 2 (34) - 28-06-09
The rumours surrounding Wymondham's posistion in division one would be down to there home form and from this second showing looked to be well in contention with finishing in a promising posistion as they nearly took all eight points from Carter.
The first session went to plan as on mat one saw P. King, S. Phillips and C. Mann beat J. Forster, D. Lamb and M. Woods. The away side, at the start, did not grab hold of the lines on the mat and found themselves 10-3 down after three ends. The lack of back woods for the away side were there downfall as they conceaded nine shots on three ends towards the end of the match as they slumped to a 22-7 defeat. On mat 2 S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips beat F. Edy, J. Woods and G. Clarke in another match was pretty one sided for the home side as by twelve ends they were already 12-2 up. As Jean and Frank swapped positions they manged to pick up six shots in the last six ends as the match finished 19-8 to the home side.
Second session on mat 1 saw a very close match which was decided on the last end as J. Forster, D. Lamb and M. Woods beat S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips in a very "nip and tuck" game. A dead end on the 14th left the score at 11-11 and Melly with his last wood manged to take a two for a very important 13-11 win for the away side. On mat two B. Saunders, S. Phillips and C. Mann beat F. Edy, J. Woods and G. Clarke 23-6 for a very pleasing six points to keep the preassure on Kirby and Carter.
First Bus 4 v Wymondham 4 - 15-06-09
A new look Wymondham side travelled to First Bus for the second time where they took back with them a very respectable four points. The first session on mat 1 saw S. Archer, P. King and C. Mann win against J. Kemp, E. Oatway and R. Oatway. In a very close game where both sides took the lead at various stages in the match it was the away side that picked up a crucial four on the sixth to keep the game close. The home side hit back straight after picking up a three, then a single but the the last four out of five ends was won by Wymondham to see them edge out winners by 15-12 in an enthrawling match between the two skips. On mat 2 P. Saunders, S. Foster and D. Phillips lost to G. Crowe, L. Crowe and M. Kemp. This was a game where the away side found themselves struggling to keep up with there impressive start which was a surprise as they were the unbeaten triple in the Norwich cup there in the winter season. After four ends they were 7-0 up which then saw the home sides lead and second swap posistions, which then turned the game dramatically in their favour and after that the away side then only scored on two other ends as they slumped to a 14-9 defeat.
Second session again on mat 1 saw S. Archer, P. King and C. Mann win against J. Cummins, L. Crowe and M. Kemp as the away side cruised into a 10-0 lead after only three ends. This was very much needed as the home sides lead and second swapped again and nearly produced the same result as there last game as the away side only managed to score on three more ends. The away side struggled to keep heads tight and the home side manged to take advantage with some promising ends, untill skip Mann manged to limit the damage to ones and two's. After eleven ends the home side were on a run of four successive ends to peg the score back to 12-8 untill the away side scored a massive three on end twelve to see them creep over the line to win 15-12. On mat 2 again P. Saunders, S. Foster and D. Phillips failed to pick up any points as they lost to J. Cummins, E. Oatway and R. Oatway 8-14. This match nearly started the opposite, for the away side as they were already 1-7 down after five ends. The home side were much more consistent and even when the all female Wymondham block looked to be clawing there way back into the match, Bob at skip would make sure they picked up no more than one's or two's or produce shot wood himself with his precise firing shots which bearly missed the wood. Pat, Shirl and Deb will be dissapointed they didnt even win a match but will be glad with there performance at Sprowston and that Wymondham will be taking four crucial points back to keep up there good start to division 1 life.
Sprowston SSC 2 v Wymondham 6 - 01-06-09
Wymondham travelled to Sprowston for the first time in there history and produced a fantastic 6-2 points win. The first session was shared as B. Saunders, S. Phillips and C. Mann lost 8-14 to T. Fletchers triple. The early exchanges saw the away side stuggle to cope with weight and the tricky lines the mat posed. After various swapping around during the match they managed to score the last five succesive ends but only managing to score ones as skip Fletcher came to save many times. On the other mat S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips got off to a blistering start going 7-1 up after three ends against P. Smart, D. Dewing and P. Smart. For a new venue they managed to rack up an impressive 19 shots against opponents on paper that looked hard to beat. The match finished 19-13. Second session saw the same triple play just as well as the first and managed to overturn a 9-14 deficate with four ends to go against T. Fletchers triple to win 17-14. The other mat saw S. Phillips, B. Saunders and C. Mann produce a very dominate disaply after the third end where skip Mann changed Steve to second and Brain to lead. All had a lot better second game against J. Poynter, D. Dewing and P. Smart who cruised to a 22-7 victory. Even though Sprowston had not played for a while Wymondham where "up for it" after the dissapointing result at Hevingham and produced some great bowls especially from Sylvia, Shirley and Deb to boost there posistion in the league.
Hevingham 6 v Wymondham 2 - 22-05-09
Wymondham travelled to Hevingham where yet again they failed to get a result as they went down 6-2, the same as last season. First session saw the only win come from J. Li Rocchi, P. King and C. Mann who beat M. Williamson, M. Hall and D. Sharpe. The away side shot into a 10-1 lead after only four ends, and then picked up another four on end six, to then make it 14-2. A dropped five on end seven for the away side was there only "blip" as Joe, Peter and Chris all had a consistent game and cruised to a 22-10 win. S. Phillips, S. Foster and D. Phillips went down 12-15 to P. Bunn, P. Williamson and I. McLean. The away side got off to a bad start going down 6-0 after four ends. The next seven ends saw them pick up twelve shots to go into 12-7 lead after eleven ends. But when Ian changed with Pat in the mid part, the game then turned on it's head with Pat playing some superb shots to pick up eight shots in the last four ends to win the game 15-12.
Second session saw a dissapointing performance from Joe, Peter and Chris who went down to P. Bunn, P. Williamson and I. McLean 17-7. From such a brilliant perfromance in the first game the away side played poorley and were made to pay as the away side only scored on three of the fifteen ends. Being unconsistent cost Steve, Shirley and Debbie there second match against A. Bunn, M. Hall and D. Sharpe as for periods of the game had strong ends picking up two three's on ends three and four to make the score 6-5. After this not many big scores were picked up from the away side apart from end 13 where a four saw them just a point behind at 13-14. But then a dropped three on end 14 sealed a second deafeat for the triple. Overall this was another dissapointing result as this was not the "A" side that was playing but Hevingham still have a strong squad, and are still a tough challenge for anyone.
Wymondham 4 v Kirby Bedon "A" 4 - 17-05-09
Wymondham's first home game of the season saw a dissapointing start with both blocks going down by quite big margins in the first session. On mat 1 P. King, S. Phillips and C. Mann lost to C. Aggas, T. Goldsmith and S. Goldsmith in a match that looked like the home side where going to walk away with it. A bright start saw them go into an 11-3 lead after five ends. But then the home side took the foot off the gas and let the away side dominate there after as the home side only scored two of the reamining ten ends, as they went down 24-14. Mat 2 saw S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips also lose to J. Watson, P. Watson and J. Aggas. This game saw lead Sylvia still struggling a little with her wrist injury which caused her not be at her best. This showed as the home triple only scored on five ends out of the fifteen as they lost 19-9.
Second session showed a more spirited resurgence for the home side as on mat 1 P. Saunders, S. Foster and D. Phillips beat C. Aggas, T. Goldsmith and S. Goldsmith. Like the first game the home side went into a commanding lead at 7-1 after five ends. Pat as lead had a good game along with Deb and Shirley who also played well. They went on to pick up a 4 on end ten and a 3 on end twelve as they won 19-9. On mat 2 P. King, . Saunders and C. Mann beat J. Watson, P. Watson and J. Aggas. This showed how Wymondham can play like when they play with confidence as the Kirby side only managed to score on three of the fifteen ends. King and Mann both made up for there poor performances on the first game as Brian also had a good game as second as they won 21-5. Wymondham will be dissapointed with the draw but will be pleased with second half performances which got them the draw.
Bob Carter 4 v Wymondham 4 - 12-05-09
Wymondham kicked off there summer league div 1 campaign with a very respectable four all draw away at the Bob Carter centre. First session on mat 1 saw P. Saunders, B. Saunders and C. Mann beat F. Edy, S. Bridge and G. Clarke 14-10. The first six ends saw Wymondham race into an 8-1 lead, towards the end of the game with the score at 14-9 Wymondham were 5 down on the mat with a wood remaining and Mann had to play a great last shot to which he managed to capture the win. On mat 2 J. Forester, D. Lamb and M. Woods beat S. Foster, D. Phillips and S. Phillips in a very close match which finished 13-12 to the home side. Both teams had good woods at various stages of the match which made for a very "nip and tuck" game.
Second session on mat 1 saw J. Woods, N. Willard and M. Woods beat P. King, B. Saunders and C. Mann in which was pretty one sided affair for the home triple. A four on end four and a three on end six put the nails in the coffin early on as the score after six ends was 10-2. Wymondham's lead and second gave little help to skip Mann who in turn also struggled as the game finshed 17-10. On mat 2 S. Foster, D. Phillips and S. Phillips beat F. Edy, S. Bridge and G. Clarke in very topsy turby game. The first four ends saw Wymondham win three of them with the score at 4-1. On end five Wymondham conceaded four but then immediately hit back also picking up a four. Ends 10,11 and 12 saw Wymondham all pick up points and saw there lead increase to 14-6. They then saw the game out to win 16-12.
Overall this was a good four points to build on as they have a big home game against current champs Kirby Bedon "A" on sunday.
