2010 - Div 1
Wymondham 7 (60) v Framingham Earl 1 (37) - 25/07/2010
Frammingham Earl's first visit to Wymondham did not end up how they wished as the 7-1 win by Wymondham now condem's them to life in division 2 again next season and still see's vice captain Chris Mann keep his 100% winning record. Although Framingham Earl had a real chance of taking points as the Saunders/Phillips combination were unable to attend with other comitments but for Framingham they also had a scratched team with them also only able of just getting the six required players.
The first session on mat 1 saw Framingham's only point scored as M. Fisher, M. Linsdell and C. Mann drew against G. Kidd, T. Shelley and R. Lumley 13-13. For a lot of the matches at home this season has seen Wymondham produce big leads at the start and this again happened as an 11-3 lead was opened up after nine ends. But then the foot was then taken off the gas and Framingham came back into it with a two then four straight after to bring the match within two. Perhaps complacency creped into the home side as they had done enough to win this match but they again gave away a three then a single to the away side who took the lead by one with one end remaining. With the home side holding one Blazer required a dead draw to clinch it but the wood grazed the jack and fell out but really the match should of never been in that posistion. "A lot still to learn" is an expression to use here!
On mat 2 S. Archer, S. Foster and P. King beat P. Adcock, D. Bunn and K. Bunn 12-10. A close match as the scoreline shows but another early lead was built up by the home side as they lead 8-4 after eight ends. Karl's reading of the game at skip is very good for Framingham and this alone meant the game was going to be tight. Peter at lead and Karl's wife at second gave stubborn resistance but this was not enough to see them through as Sylvia, Shirl and Peter re-produced the performaces they did on monday night which gave them the win. With the home side still maintaining a solid 11-5 lead the away side then hit back and brang the score back to 11-9 with two ends remaining but again both sides were solid and singles were shared on the last two ends for a hard fought win for Wymondham.
The second session saw even better performances from the home side as S. Archer, S. Foster and P. King carried on their form from the last match and cruised to a 21-2 win over G. Kidd, T. Shelley and R. Lumley. The strength of Sylvia and Shirley on mat 1 was evident as they were dominant throughout the match as only two shots were scored by Framingham. Peter again had a strong performance at skip and is a handy player to have as he can play in every posistion given to him. After the fourth end the scores were level at 2-2 and the match from there on was in little doubt as the home side held the advantage in the next eleven ends, although Framingham were very unlucky on some ends not to increase their score.
On mat 2 a slightly better performance was had by M. Fisher, M. Linsdell and C. Mann who beat P. Adcock, D. Bunn and K. Bunn 14-12. Yet again another close result on mat 2 as the home side again pinched it. Mary and Mark had improvements from their first games and Blazer again struggled somewhat to finish shots where normally they would be a certainty. But at least when oppourtunities opened up for him most of the time they were taken unlike in the first match. Karl again kept the away side in it cutting shots down and ending up shot sometimes but end twelve is where the pendulum swung to Wymondham as Karl's firing wood came down and took all of Framingham woods out of the head to hand Wymondham a five and put them in a commanding lead at 14-8. The last three ends went to Framingham but the shots scored were not enough to see them get anything out of the match.
Another pleasing home performance with an under strengthed team and hopefully the point dropped today will not come back to haunt them as second place is still in their grasp. For Framingham and Peter we wish them a successful winter season and hopefully a return to division 1 in the 2012 season.
Bob Carter 6 (78) v Wymondham 2 (52) - 13/07/2010
This result almost confirms that Kirby Bedon A's reign of ten consequetive years of winning division 1 is over as Carter clinched six points against Wymondham who will now have to set their sights on second place.
First session on mat 1 saw B. Saunders, M. Linsdell and C. Mann comprehensively beaten 10-31 by J. Sparham, S. Bridge and G. Clarke. The result speaks for itself, the away side were not up to the standards set by Carter and were therefore beaten and heavily too, although making various changes throughout. Mat 2 faired better but got the same result as S. Foster, D. Phillips and S. Phillips lost 13-15 to F. Edy, D. Lamb and M. Woods. One end cost Wymondham the victory as a dropped five on end ten changed the course of the game, as up to that point Wymondham played a very tight and consistent game leading 9-3 after nine ends. The dropped five then two put the scores level at 10-10 after eleven ends. The away side got their noses back infront but were beaten on the last two ends dropping a two then three where Melly had his best end!
After the break on mat 1 P. King, M. Linsdell and C. Mann turned up for the second game to beat J. Woods, D. Lamb and M. Woods 15-10. Peter came in to replace Brian who had a strong game along with Mark and Blazer who played considerably better than their last. Although going 2-7 down after five ends Wymondham hit back and levelled two ends later at 7-7. End twelve was the crucial one for the away team as Blazer picked the Jack up for three which then made the scoreline 13-9 after twelve ends. A solid few ends after saw them ease home for a big two points.
On mat 2 S. Foster, D. Phillips and S. Phillips lost 14-22 to J. Sparham, S. Bridge and G. Clarke. With both triples unchanged Carter took the game to Wymondham as the trio played much the same way as in their first game picking up some good shots and ending up worthy winners, credit to Shirley, Deb and Steve who battled well but were out muscled in the end.
This was a predictable result knowing that before nights match only two points have been dropped by Carter at home all season but never the less one that Wymondham battled for and got two points out of that could be crucial come the end of the season.
Framingham Earl 2 (42) v Wymondham 6 (68) - 07/07/10
Wymondham's first trip to Framingham Earl produced some great team performances but before that happened Peter Adcock announced that a minutes silence be held for the death of Roy Grapes last Monday.
The first session on mat 1 saw S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips lose to R. Copland, R. Lumley and M. BLaza 9-15. Although making a positive start moving into a 4-1 lead after four ends on the foreign mats, the home side hit back to level after the next end. From then the home side never lost the lead although the ladies did try hard, but a breakthrough never occured as Mervyn for Framingham steadied them through most ends. The twelve shots conceded between ends five and ten cost them dear.
On mat 2 P. Saunders, S. Phillips and C. Mann beat J. Blaza, P. Adcock and C. Emms 18-7. Another bright start from Wymondham sweeping into a 5-0 lead after four ends continued throughout the match as Peter changed from two to skip half way through to change fortunes for the home side but this never quite happended as Pat, Steve and Chris played consistanlty well throughout for a posititve result.
After the break S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips won their second match 18-11 against J. Blaza, C. Emms and P. Adcock. Playing similar to the first match the result this time went in their favour as playing on the same mat in the second half gave them more of an advantage. Although still up against a stuborn Framingham side who this time saw Peter straight in at skip and made it more of a challenge. The game was level at 11-11 after eleven ends but then the quality of the away side shone through as they pulled away scoring every end from there. One end the Wymondham trio were holding a six until Peter drew in to cut down to just one but he alone could not stop everything in what could be a crucial result.
On mat 2 P. King and M. Linsdell came in to replace Steve and Pat with C. Mann and the result did not change as they beat J. Banner, R. Lumley and M. Blaza 23-9. Another strong performance from Blazer showing the home side how to play at times although at the start Mervyn had the slight rub of the green to cut shots down most of the time but it was never going to last all game as the away side after eight ends ran away with it. Peter and Mark played well having not played there before and with Blazer cleaned up most things. A four on end nine and a five on end ten made the game safe, Mervyn then went to second on end eleven but again a four was dropped by them on end fourteen and another could of been on the last if a brilliant draw had not of been done by their skip.
A great result for Wymondham having never played against Framingham Earl who gave as a great friendly game of bowls and put up a test but they will hope not to be relegated again from the 1st division but it will be a close call to decide.
Wymondham 6 (62) v Bob Carter 2 (39) - 27/06/10
The decision to go ahead with the game was always goin to be the right one with England again failing to beat one of the big teams in the world cup and Wymondham putting an end to Carter's seven game unbeaten run with a superb result after the dissapointment at Kirby on Monday.
The first session on mat 1 saw P. Saunders, M. Linsdell and C. Mann eventually beat J. Sparham, D. Lamb and M. Woods 19-10. The scoreline at the end probably does not reflect how the game went as after eight ends the home side found themselves 2-7 down although not playing badly. Blazer was in uncomprimising mood as the game went on and put his opposite number Melly under pressure when Carter had their poorest ends. Collecting a two, two and a three between ends nine, ten and eleven seemed to turn the complexion of the match but then a three to Carter on the thirteenth end bought the scores level to 10-10. Then the home side stepped it up another gear on the last two ends which meant Melly had to fire to save but missed or caught woods wrong and went down on both dropping a 4 then 5 on the final end. Apart from three or four ends Carter looked in control with Chump and Minty containing Pat and Mark for most of the game but the last two ends especially cost Carter the match as Wymondham punished them.
On mat 2 Carter struck back with N. Willard, S. Bridge and G. Clarke beating S. Archer, S. Phillips and D. Phillips 12-15. The result in the end was not as bad as first thought as the away side cruised into a massive 15-0 lead after ten ends. Nigel and Steve were in blistering form for Carter and most of the time George was just adding shots. After a change to the home side which saw Steve changed to skip and Deb to second. This then started to make an impact as the away side did not score a single shot after they got to 15. The last five ends saw the home side score nine shots but the damage had already been done.
Second session saw changes to both teams as on mat 1 P. King and B. Saunders came in with S. Phillips at skip who beat J. Woods, D. Lamb and M. Woods 11-9. A hard fought game saw the home side edge it. With the scores balanced at 4-4 after six ends the Wymondham triple then took a big advantage in the match when they doubled their score to make it 8-4 after eight ends. They then went extended their lead to 10-5 after eleven ends, but Carter hit back and trailed by just two shots with two ends to go at 10-8. The last end Carter had a chance of scoring four shots but Melly again could not produce what was required but credit goes to the home side who again put the away side under pressure.
On mat 2 P. Saunders, M. Linsdell and C. Mann carried on their form from the second half of the first match to comprehensively beat F. Edy, S. Bridge and G. Clarke 20-5. Pat at lead was in blistering form again against Frank as the tactics enforced by Blazer putting a 3/4 long jack in which Frank struggled with the majority of the time to get to which proved to be the key on such a big winning margin. The home side managed to rack up 19 shots in ten ends before the away side finally managed to get a shot on end eleven after numerous changes which eventually saw George lead, Frank at two and Steve skip. They then went on to take the last four of the five ends remaining but all was in vain as this was a comfortable result for Pat, Mark and Chirs who all played formidably well.
This result was massive, with the team now having over a week off before going to Framingham Earl a week on Wednesday where they will look to get a similar result. Carter are a very strong outfit who will no doubt go on to win the league but Wymondham were up for the challenge today and proved they can still mix it with the best!
Bob Carter in their new kit.
Kirby Bedon A 7 (66) v Wymondham 1 (45) - 21/06/10
The second away defeat see's Wymondham's task made even bigger for a top two finish. The team tried hard to break the resiliant Kirby A team but their skill and experience again held firm towards the end of all the games to take the 7-1 win.
The first session on mat 1 saw S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips draw against L. Chilman, J. Aggas and P. Watson 12-12. The away side held the lead all the way through and played like they had against the B team earlier in the season but the A team proved their strength all the way till the end where Phil managed to get a three on the last end for a gutted Wymondham side who thought they had done enough. On mat two B. Saunders, P. King and C. Mann went down heavily to C. Aggas, T. Goldsmith and S. Goldsmith 8-22. A good start from the away side never continued as home side got stronger as the match went on and outplayed the Wymondham trio for a miserable result.
Second session did not bode well either but again on mat 1 S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips held firm but came undone by C. Aggas, T. Goldsmith and S. Goldsmith in the last few ends as they went down 12-16. Leading 9-7 after eleven ends the home side hit back and scored nine shots in the last four ends to seal Wymondham's fate, the ladies played well and will feel a point was not enough for their efforts tonight.
A similar story developed again on mat 2 as P. Saunders, S. Phillips and C. Mann went down to L. Chilman, J. Aggas and P. Watson 13-16. Ends four and eight were the hammer blows conceding a five and a four to trail 5-12 after eight ends. But the away side came back to trail by just one shot at end thirteen but Phil again held his nerve to take shot on the last end to condem Wymondham to another defeat to the A team. A massive result is now required at home to Carter on sunday to try and get back in contention!
First Bus 6 (46) v Wymondham 2 (61) - 07/06/10
With Bob Carter dominating the league so far with maximum points at Thorpe Marriott A and Kirby Bedon A, Wymondham knew they had to get a result tonight to keep in touch but it wasn't to happen with First Bus getting revenge for the 8-0 home win earlier in the season. The result was a bizzare won with overall shots going Wymondham's way with an impressive 33-1 win for Brian, Steve and Chris but the other games did not follow suit.
First session on mat 1 saw P. Saunders, P. King and C. Mann lose to B. Patterson, L. Crowe and M. Kemp 7-17. A poor show from the away side who never realy got to grips with the mat although 4-0 up after two ends the home side went on to win the next ten out of thirteen ends for a solid home win. On mat 2 S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips also lost to C. Coman, T. Gray and B. Oatway 11-15. A much closer game but still the same result, as the home side just shaded it on the close of play.
Second session on mat 1 saw two changes to the line up as Brian and Steve came in for Pat and Peter which made a dramatic difference and one that no one would see coming as they stormed to a 33-1 win. Bob and co had no luck throughout the match and scored the one on end 14 which in the end the Wymondham block were a little gutted to of dropped. On mat 2 S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips lost to J. Cummins, L. Crowe and M. Kemp 10-13. Again another close game but the home side held most of the cards. Leslie and Maurice together are a tough nut to crack and so it proved again. Even with the Wymondham trio holding a five on one end Maurice managed to get second wood which kept their lead in tact. A four on end seven saw the match tied at 6-6 but then after the home side never looked back as they only conceded another two ends.
This was a bad result but First Bus came out the blocks fighting and got the result they deserved, the team now looks forward to Felixstowe on Sunday to compete in the summer club championships where they hope to reach the finals for the second year running.
Wymondham 4 (50) v Kirby Bedon B 4 (55) - 30/05/10
This was not a result the home side were expecting seeming as though they had beaten them so comfortably on their own turf. But the Kirby B side adapted themselves quickly to the mats and gave Wymondham very little room for error and are also the first club in the summer league to take overall shots from Wymondham at home. First session on mat saw M. Linsdell, S. Phillips and C. Mann beat P. Johnson, C. East and G. Chilvers 13-8. Like all the match's which were close the home side held the upper hand most of the time as they kept the lead from end six. On mat 2 A. Stratton, S. Foster and D. Phillips lost 11-18 to S. Brown, B. Herman and J. Brown. A welcome return for Andrew after two years out but this was not be a day to remember for him as the Kirby team dug in and got the result which on the close of play they deserved as the away team finished off the match with a five!
The second session Wymondham were at least looking to win both games but again stumbled as on mat 1 A. Stratton, S. Foster and D. Phillips lost for the second time against P. Johnson, C. East and G. Chilvers 11-17. It was unusual for Deb and Shirl to have lost both games in an afternoon but that's what happened as Chris East a good tactician for Kirby played well and along with Peter and Gerald kept ends tight. Ends ten and thirteen were the killers where two fives were dropped. Andy changed to skip after the first five was conceded but it was too little to late as Kirby got a decent four points. Things got better on mat 2 as P. King, S. Phillips and C. Mann beat S. Brown, B. Herman and J. Brown. Again the Kirby triple gave little away but Peter at lead played well and Steve and Chris likewise played slightly better than their opponents. A four on end nine and a five on end thirteen put the game to bed.
Overall Wymondham were without their key leads Pat and Sylvia and therefore distorted the home sides play but they were still expecting an 8-0 win, but on the over hand Kirby have been in a good run of form lately as they took valueble wins at Frammingham Earl and Thorpe Marriott and beat First Bus at home.
Wymondham 8 (61) v First Bus 0 (32) - 16/05/10
With Deb, Steve and Shirley unavailable for selection it was left up to vice captain Chris "Security" Mann to select the team and keep his unbeaten record as vice captain which happened with some dogged performances against a resilient First Bus side.
First session on mat 1 saw P. Saunders, M. Linsdell and C. Mann beat J. Cummins, B. Patterson and M. Kemp 17-9. The home side always looked in control but both leads were in excellent form and set the tone for Mark and Chris to play well against their respective opponents which they did. Mark's performances are geting stronger with each game but proberbly had better games at Kirby last monday. But nether the less played well to quell the danger that lurked at times in the match. Chris was on form again and against Maurice at skip always had the upper hand most ends.
On mat 2 S. Archer, P. King and B. Saunders beat John Cummins, T. Gray and B. Oatway 19-10. Although making a slow start and going 1-5 down after three ends the home side soon got themselves adjusted to the mat and played the more dominant bowls in the middle and end of the match. Sylvia again strong at lead and with Peter and Brian consolidating most things apart from when Bob came down with his large woods and tore apart heads, but this alone was not enough as twelve shots in six ends put the game beyond First Bus' reach.
No changes were made to the Wymondham team at half time and the results did not change either as on mat 1 S. Archer, P. King and B. Saunders beat J. Kemp, Bob. Patterson and M. Kemp 10-9. As the result suggests this was a tight game with Fist Bus holding the lead for the first eight ends but a string of four consequtive ends where seven shots were scored changed the course of the game as the home side took an 8-5 lead after ten ends. The home side held their nerve although conceding three shots on the last two ends for a great result.
On mat 2 P. Saunders, M. Linsdell and C. Mann beat B. Patterson, T. Gray and B. Oatway 15-4. Another strong performance again from Pat who had another superb afternoon and lead the way as the away sides one and two couldn't quite cope with the onslought from the home side. Bob most ends had to attack heads and never really posed a big threat as the home side were strong all the way through. Although a shot from Chris which saw a four go to just one where there was a possibility of a full house was the correct decision in most people's eyes as the result was already known and county team assistant manager Bob agreed although Pat's expression and shout of "PRATT" made her feelings known of the shot!
This result is a great boost with an under strength side but there was still a lot of quality in the team without three key players and produced a better result than last year where only a 4-4 draw was managed! A big thanks again goes to Mary who supported, made the teas and did the raffle.
Kirby Bedon "B" 0 (26) v Wymondham 8 (67) - 10/05/10
A great start to the summer league season with a strong 8-0 away win at Kirby bedon B. Not expecting an easy game following their 6-2 defeat to the B team two seasons ago Wymondham have gained experienced from playing at the venue a few times since and duely came away from Kirby Bedon with their first victory and a comprehensive one at that.
The first session on mat 1 saw S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips beat S. Brown, B. Hurmun and J. Brown 21-7 a confident display from all the Wymondham players who contained the Kirby triple to only score on three of the fifteen ends for a pretty comfortable result. On mat 2 P. King, M. Linsdell and C. Mann beat C. Johnson, B. Cudden and G. Chilvers 16-8. A dropped five on the first end was all that troubled the away side as they went on to win the next eleven out of the fourteen ends remaining.
Second session captain Steve Phillips kept things as they were with him and Pat left on the bench and this decision was the correct one as both teams continued the form from their first matches. On mat 1 S. Archer, S. Foster and D. Phillips beat C. Johnson, B. Cudden and G. Chilvers 15-4. The away side played even better and still managed to only concede three ends for an impressive nights bowling. On mat 2 P. King, M. Linsdell and C. Mann beat S. Brown, B. Hermun and J. Brown 15-7. This was more of a tight game at the start but the controlled bowling by all the Wymondham players evntually payed dividence as they started to pull away from end eleven as they won the last five ends for a very pleasing start to the season which puts them in good stead for the first home game against First Bus Sunday.
